The time is going way too fast...

Blijf op de hoogte en volg Marit

15 Juni 2017 | Verenigde Staten, Houston

I was sick on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, but I felt much better on Friday. Mathilde and I walked to a Starbucks right outside of the neighborhood that morning. So we were just casually walking on the sidewalk and suddenly we had to stop, because the sidewalk stops. It just turns into grass or something, this is a typical sidewalk here in Houston, because almost nobody uses them ;)
In the evening we had a graduation party of some church friends of our host family. That family hosts a Swedish boy, Carl, and he is a really good friend of Mathilde and me so that was a fun night. We played basketball, ate a lot of American food and talked about our exchange year :)

The next morning, I finally finished my 7th Harry Potter book yaaasss. Now I read all 7 of them in English during my exchange year: reached my goal haha. Stephanie, Mathilde and I also went to the pool that day and even though it is in our neighborhood, we drove there! Yup, that’s how lazy we are :) We spent there a couple of hours and then we started to get hungry. For some reason, the three of us just went crazy about food haha. We went from the pool to Sonic drive through, and we ordered slushes and mozzarella sticks!!! Super happy, I loooove mozzarella sticks :) When we came home from that, we ordered pizza for dinner hahaha. Let’s just say that it is part of our experience lol. We also watched the 2 last Harry Potter movies that night. It was a great summer day.

Sunday morning, Stephanie, mom, Mathilde and I left the house to spend 3 days at the lake house of Kat’s family in law. It is in Fort Worth, which is near Dallas. The drive was about 5 hours, so it was really long….. Of course we were still not out of Texas… We met Kat in a supermarket in Dallas to do grocery shopping for our 3 days stay in the lake house. When we arrived at the lake house, it looked so cool, it was amazing. We met Anne (Chris’ mom), Michael (Chris’s younger brother), Michael’s girlfriend and Katie (Chris’ younger sister). Not everybody stayed the whole day or night. The house had a garage, but no bedrooms or something like that. There was a living room so that’s where we all slept haha, on couches and sleeping beds. There was also a big big big grass field which of course was attached to the lake. There was a dock on the lake which had a small house at the end and there was a boat and two jet ski’s under the little house. Inside the house there was a real candy machine, a snow cone machine and a popcorn machine, dreams come true hahaha! We played the board game Ticket To Ride USA like 5 times that day, it was really ‘the game of the trip’ :) We also did BB gun shooting the first day. The gun looks very real, but you don’t shoot with bullets. Instead you shoot with these little silver balls. It was still very cool and we tried to shoot soda cans or small buckets. Michael also had a bow and arrow, which we tried too of course! I never realized it is so hard to stretch the bow haha. I’m weak, but it was great to try :)
Michael had more gadgets haha. He had a little speedboat with a controller, so we played a little bit with that on the dock. He also had a drone. I knew what it was of course, but I had never seen it in action. The drone could fly up to 6 miles in the air!!!! It had a strong camera on the bottom of the drone, so whenever we were on the dock and the drone flew above us, Michael took pictures and videos haha. The drone was connected to his phone so you could see the lake from above on his phone, because that’s what the drone was videotaping. I still don’t really see what the use is of a drone, but it is fun to play with ;) For dinner we ate ribs, which I’m usually not a big fan of, but mom made them on the BBQ and they were delicious! We also had a campfire outside, to do s’mores. We even had fire work! And because we were kind of in the middle of nowhere, we didn’t have angry neighbors haha. The mosquitoes were killing us, so we had to go back inside early. To end this perfect day, we first played Apples To Apples and then Cards Against Humanity. They’re both games in which you must complete sentences with funny words. We had an amazing time and laughed a lot. We stopped the game and all went to bed at 3 am…..

The next morning, we woke up and we had bacon and eggs for breakfast. Michael left, so it was just Mathilde, Stephanie, Kat, mom and me. We first tanned on the dock for a couple of hours haha. Then we took out 3 kayaks and Mathilde, Kat and I kayaked for a while. It was great, I love kayaking haha. It was kind of windy and Kat fell out of hers and it was really funny ;) When it started raining, we had to get out. We came out just in time, because when we were inside again, it started storming and raining super hard. We played Ticket To Ride again until the storm was over. Mathilde told us about a European version of the game and we all wanted to play it. So Kat and Stephanie went out to a bookstore super far away (because we were in the middle of nowhere) to buy the European version ;) In the meantime, Mathilde and I kayaked again. This time, the sun was going down, so it was beautiful to see when we were in the water. When Kat and Stephanie came back, we first ate nachos for dinner. Then we started playing Ticket To Ride Europe and it was great, because there are all these different rules. When we were finally done, it was 1 am so we all went to bed.

We woke up early the next morning because we had to sit in the car for 5 hours again to go home. We packed all out stuff, cleaned the house and eventually arrived at home in the afternoon. Everybody was super tired, so we just chilled or took naps haha. The days at the lake house were amazing!

On Wednesday, Mathilde and I went to the mall with Carl (our Swedish church friend). I bought some more Texas souvenirs haha. It was a fun day, but also sad, because Carl left the US on Thursday, so it was the last day that we saw him :(

The first thing I did on Thursday, was close my American bank account. It’s so weird, more and more things stop now, it’s going so fast… Later that day, mom, Mathilde, Gaia, Stephanie and I, went to the museum district. There we met Jake, Nate and Luke. It was a beautiful, but hot day. We went to the Museum Of Natural Science, and on Thursdays it is free so that was great! This was the location of our prom, so it was super weird so be there again and see it all in a different perspective haha. Of course, we saw hundreds of skeletons and there were halls of human evolution or beautiful stones. After the museum, we went to the park nearby and ate sandwiches. The boys played on the swings, and we just hang out there for a while. Around 6 pm, we left the park and went to an ice cream place. It was honestly one of the best places I’ve ever been to haha. The cone was super big and the ice cream was amazing. It was an amazing day again. Everybody went home and in the evening, I watched Night at the Museum with mom, which was funny because we had just been in a museum :)

Friday was a pool day. Gaia, Mathilde and I went to our neighborhood pool at 11 am and we didn’t leave until 5 pm… We spent there the whole day and it was super nice. Josh came too later in the afternoon. The reason we left the pool was because of thunder. Everybody had to leave, but it was okay because we had already been there the whole day haha. We all went home, but Josh came over again that night to have a Ice Age marathon with Mathilde and me :) (I loooooove Disney)

Chris's birthday pool party was on Saturday. It was a great day for the pool. We had water fights and of course we had to play Ticket To Ride again ;) We had hamburgers for dinner and of course mom’s famous chocolate birthday cake! I’m going to miss the pool days a lot haha.
