Our hostmom worked at a quilt show that week, photo's are posted on Facebook. Mathilde, Stephanie and I went to the show on Sunday. It was a really big room and there were some really pretty things and huge blankets, all made of quilt.
After the weekend everything started getting crazy, because on Tuesday november 8th we found out who was going to be the next president of the US. I had an assignment for my government class that day. The teacher gave us a map and we had to follow the election all night long and color the states red or blue. While I was coloring all the states I was looking at it and thinking: man, that is a lot of red.... And after Trump won Florida I knew it was over so I went to bed. And ofcourse the next day I found out that Trump was the new president of the US....
In school people came in class and yelled: Trump, Trump, Trump!! And I was just sitting there like hmmm ok.... The rest of the week students and teachers just talked a lot about the election.
The next Saturday we went to the drive in movies for the first time! That was just so cool. We watched Dr. Strange and after that movie there was another movie but that one was a little stupid. When you arrive there are 2 big fields with a big screen on both fields. All the cars are parked in rows and there were people who came with trucks ( just like we did :) ) and we all had blankets in the back of the truck so you could just chill during the movie. It was an amazing night. It looked so much like the drive in place in the movie Grease! There was also a little playground for the little kids before and after the movies and there was that one kid who was swinging during the movie and that made a noise everytime he moved the swing hahah. But he stopped after a couple a minutes so we could concentrate on the movie again.
We went to church on Sunday and it was very emotional for some people. At the end everybody came to the front to pray for each other and there were people who cried... Mathilde and I also had a discussion with our host family about God and Jesus. We had so many question about who they are and what you have to to if you become a Christian and since when people believe in God. And it was so weird to talk about it because we both have different beliefs about what created the world so we decided to stop talking about it hahaha.
Two friends of us, Austin and Rachel, they are brother and sister, play ice hockey! So last week we went to the ice hockey game with their family. And while it's 30 degrees outside, it feels like -5 degrees inside the ice hockey building... Ice hockey is a very tough game, people are hitting each other all the time and one time the puck flew over the protection shield into the supporters area! It ended in a tie but it was a really cool game to see. They just run around on their ice skates like it is nothing and I am struggling on the ice with every step I take...
On monday in a church in our neighborhood they have a youth event. It is called Young Life. A lot of students from Westside go to young life to have fun and to pray. So we went last week and we did a lot of games together and sang and at the end the head of Youth Life told us a story about the Bible. I didn't understand anything about the story but playing the games was very nice :)
Last Wednesday we had senior skate night at the rollerskating place in Houston. Only seniors were allowed to come and everybody was dressed up like 70's and 80's. It was crowded because we were with so many students but it was fun. There was a race between teachers and one teacher fell right after the signal.. It was so sad but funny at the same time, he is my US government teacher :) But he wasn't the only one though, so many people couldn't skate but everybody still had fun.
I went to the movies with 2 other exchange students from Sweden and Denmark with their host mom and grandma and we had a lot fun together. I also stayed the night at their house and it is a gated neighborhood and they have a swimming pool in their backyard and there are 2 lakes in the neighborhood... The house was just one big castle :)
Now I am going to explain our whole family so you understand the story. So Mathilde and I live at home with our hostparents and our host sister Stephanie. Stephanie has a boyfriend, Jake, and he has two kids. Then there is another sister from Dallas, Kat, and she has a husband, Chris. The youngest sister is in college and lives in Pennsylvania but they all came down last Saturday to celebrate Thanksgiving with the family. Our aunt and uncle live across the street and they have 2 daughters, they are twins around 22 years old. Renee and Nicole. Nicole is a playwright in college. She wrote a play during the past year and now everybody can see it in the school theater! So the whole family from Pennsylvania and Dallas and some other aunts and uncles and the grandma came down to Houston to watch Nicoles play. We first ate dinner with each other at aunt Nancy's house and then went downtown Houston to the school. The play was about a lot siblings who live together and one of the siblings left the family a couple a years ago, because she became a 'famous' author. And she never helped their siblings or talked to them but now their mom died so she comes home for the funeral, but that causes a lot problems and the problems are getting worse and it was just so sad but so cool at the same time. It was a really good play, very professional. Sometimes when somebody in our family says something funny or something you don't forget, Nicole puts it in one of her plays, so during the play everything when our family heard something they recognized they laughed so hard and it was just so funny :)
Also Kat, Chris and Danielle are sleeping in our house and sometimes Jake and his boys are coming over so we have a house full of people this week!
November 20th was Larry, my hostdad and Kat's birthday. So on Saturday we ate with each other before Nicole's play and on Sunday we had our birthday dinner. And a tradition in the Jones house is that you have to stick your head in the birthdaycake and eat the first bite if it is your birthday so that is what Kat and Larry did hahaha. They also sing birthday songs, but all at the same time. And you can choose your own song in whatever language you want to sing it, so I choose a Dutch song :) I can't wait to celebrate my birthday!!
By the way, it is finally getting 'colder' here in Texas, for what they call cold... ;)
